Tradition dictates

New Kyle Baker interview? Yes, it is awesome. Some choice quotes:

“I wanted to make a DC Comic I could show a kid,” he continued. “I get all the DC books for free, and only four of them are appropriate for children. DC comics like Superman and Justice League were my favorites as a child, and I think it’s strange that a small child who loves the Justice League TV show and loves the toys, and t-shirts, and coloring books would be frightened or bored by the current JLA comic book. As DC creators, why are we targeting grown men who read Batman? And why do grown men who read Batman want a product which is so different from the brand that they grew up loving and that the world knows and loves as a children’s brand? Even the new Batman movie is child-friendly. No sex, no blood, just car chases and fistfights. I have nothing against sex and blood, I love [Arnold] Schwarzenegger movies. I just think a brand needs to be consistent, especially a franchise as beloved by children as DC Superheroes are.”

"If I don’t quit, I have some funny villains in mind. A character called 'The Weeper', who makes superheros cry. All the heroes can do is cry and make speeches, they can’t fight or use their powers, they just mope about how hard it is to be a superhero. I want to do a story about Batman’s birthday surprise party, and I also have a story where Superman fights Plas. After this series is done, I will focus on my own characters. I prefer that to working on other people’s books. I am working on a Simpsons comic story, though, and another 'Escapist'."

Roving Reporter

Hello, all. Here I am on vacation in Kentucky. If by "vacation" you mean letting my fiancee trick me into getting up at 5:30 to cook breakfast for my parents . . .

Well, she's showering now, so I thought I'd plug Comic Book Galaxy. A LOT of new stuff is going on there, and a decent column by me some of you folks might remember for when I write for a less awesome blog. Enjoy and I'll try to enjoy the rest of my vacation.
